Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church Sanctuary

The 24-hour event, After Fukushima, was presented as a part of a month-long Platform titled A Body in Places, co-curated by Judy Hussie-Taylor, Danspace Project Director, and Lydia Bell, then Managing Director, together with Eiko. Photographs were placed on the floor and on the built-in benches, and a full-length video loop was projected on the alter wall. A different set of artists performed at every hour throughout the 24 hours. The exhibition was preceded by three sets of panel discussions and Eiko’s solo performance in the chapel among the photographs.

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine

Lisa Schubert, Vice President of the Cathedral’s Programming and External Relations invited Eiko to be the Cathedral’s Artist-in-Residence. The six-month photo and video exhibition was installed at the center of the nave as a part of a larger exhibition, The Christa Project. Eiko performed not only at the exhibition opening but also at unannounced times, resulting in many impromptu conversations with visitors.

Photographs from A Body in Fukushima were exhibited in the space for a two-day event titled Come Shining: In Tribute to C.D. Wright. Her recitation at the exhibition in Santiago, Chile was C.D.’s last public appearance. Eiko performed as a part of this memorial event.

Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival
The Berkshires, MA
Pillow’s Executive and Artistic Director Pam Tatge worked closely with Eiko and Bill at Wesleyan. In the first season, she commissioned Eiko’s A Body at the Pillow. Audience members followed Eiko throughout the Pillow's diverse landscape. Photographs of A Body in Fukushima were exhibited both at the Pillow’s Duke Theater and at the Pittsfield Public Library, where Eiko also performed.

Co-curated with Todd B. Richmond and Paz Tanjuaquio, this exhibition placed photographs of Eiko in Fukushima with photos of her near Indian Point Energy Center, 29 miles (47 km) north of Manhattan by the Hudson River. Eiko’s performance started in the gallery, continued to the streets, and ended in front of a nearby power station with a DANGER sign.

During the academic year 2017-2018, Barry Chernoff, the College of Environmental Studies chair, invited Eiko to become a Think Tank Fellow for “From Disruptions to Disasters: A Lens on the Human-Environment Relationship.” While living on campus, Eiko edited her seven and a half hour long video that combined hundreds of still photographs with texts and sound. Eiko met with Bill frequently to conceive this book.

Japan Women’s Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (*)
JWNDRR invited Eiko to present a lecture. When that was cancelled due to the pandemic, Eiko created a 90-minute virtual lecture, “Disaster and Art Making: From Fukushima to Pandemic,” which includes photographs taken in Fukushima, videos of how Eiko installed and performed with the photos in the U.S. and elsewhere, and how she continued to create throughout the pandemic. The video was distributed through the same network and was also used in classes at International Christian University and Tokyo University in the fall.

Eiko premiered a live outdoor performance of A Body with Fukushima, intimately interwoven with David Harrington’s video and music. Two projectors merged their images onto Eiko’s body and onto the outside wall of the CFA building. David provided various music and sounds for Eiko’s Fukushima project, and during the pandemic, they worked together in New York, and David also worked in California’s Redwoods imagining Eiko in Fukushima.

Kronos Festival premiered Eiko Otake and David Harrington: A Body in Fukushima on June 18th. David of Kronos Quartet has been offering Eiko music and sounds for her larger project A Body in Fukushima since 2018 and has commissioned this short piece that presents the core of the work.

The Museum of Modern Art’s Doc Fortnight Festival (*)

MoMA’s Doc Fortnight 2022 presented the world premiere of A Body in Fukushima. There was an in-person screening on March 6 followed by a conversation with Eiko and William Johnston and another in-person screening on March 8. The film was also available online via MoMA’s Virtual Cinema streaming platform from February 23–March 10.

FICA - International Environmental Film Festival (*)

A Body in Fukushima had its South American premiere at the 23rd FICA - International Environmental Film Festival in Goiás, Brazil, a World Heritage site. It was screened at the São Joaquim Theatre on June 2, as well as through the festival’s online platform. Cláudia Tatinge Nascimento translated the film in Portuguese.

A Body in Fukushima had its Asian premiere at Jumping Frames — Hong Kong International Movement-Image Festival, curated by festival director Elysa Wendi. It was screened as part of “International Feature Film Selections: Body Narratives” at Broadway Cinematheque. Eiko created a version of the film with English and Chinese subtitles.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
A Body in Fukushima with Portuguese subtitles was screened at the 2023 International Uranium Film Festival at Modern Art Museum Cinematheque in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and received an Honorable Mention. The festival is dedicated to all films about nuclear power and the risks of radioactivity, from uranium mining to nuclear waste, from atomic bombs to nuclear power plants, from Hiroshima to Fukushima.

Eiko's film A Body in Fukushima was selected as part of the 8th Yokohama Triennale Wild Grass: Our Lives, directed by Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu. The title of this year's Triennale is taken from the Chinese writer Lu Xun (魯迅)'s (1891–1936) anthology Wild Grass, which is about self-motivation and finding an outlet in a time of complete darkness.
