Back to Solo Project

A Body in Hong Kong, Miami, Wall Street (2016-2017)

13 minutes 48 seconds

In the fall of 2016 and winter of 2017, Eiko was an artist in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Upper Manhattan. As part of the larger art exhibition, the Christa Project, Eiko offered solo performances, a video installation, and a photo exhibition A BODY IN FUKUSHIMA, her collaborative work with photographer William Johnston.

This video was created to be part of the photo exhibition so that viewers understand how Eiko uses her body as a conduit to connect different places. It is edited from her recent performance footage of A BODY IN PLACES in three outdoor locations: Hong Kong, Miami, and Wall Street in New York. Together with another video edited solely from the still photographs by William Johnston of Eiko in Fukushima, A BODY IN PLACES was shown next to the photo wall at the center of the Cathedral.

From time to time, Eiko and William's mutable photo exhibition expands to other areas within the Cathedral in order to include either additional photos from Fukushima or other photos of Eiko taken by William Johnston in other locations. On these occasions, the A BODY IN FUKUSHIMA exhibition is amplified into a more comprehensive exhibition (including the video installation and this video), A BODY IN PLACES. Throughout the residency, Eiko explored the dignity and transcendence inherent in the ordinary and the disregarded.
